カヤックで不明男を逮捕…妻が死亡保険金受け取る

　【ロンドン支局】カヤックに乗って行方不明になった英国人男性が５年半ぶりに生きて帰ってきた事件が思わぬ展開を見せている。英捜査当局が４日、詐欺容疑で男性を逮捕すると、英大衆紙が中南米パナマで昨年撮影したとみられる男性と妻の写真を掲載した。妻には男性の死亡保険金が支払われており、捜査当局は妻から事情を聴く方針。

　地元メディアによると、２００２年３月、英イングランド北東部の渓谷でカヤックに乗って行方が分からなくなったジョン・ダーウィン容疑者（５７）が今月１日、ロンドンの警察署に出頭し、「７年前から記憶がない」などと話した。

　しかし、捜査当局は３カ月前、同容疑者が生きているとの情報を得て捜査を始めていた。５日付のデーリー・ミラー紙によると、同容疑者は妻のアンさん（５５）とともに昨年７月、パナマの不動産業者を訪れ、「新しい人生を始める」と笑顔で記念写真におさまっていた。

　アンさんは同容疑者の出頭直前、パナマに移住。同紙の取材に「夫が生きていてうれしい。死亡保険金は返済する」と答えた。捜査当局は保険金詐欺の疑いがあるとみて、写真の真偽を確かめるとともに、パナマ政府にアンさんの引き渡しを求める。

This is missing canoeist John Darwin and his wife Anne in Panama last year, when everyone thought he was dead.
The sensational picture emerged last night as Darwin was arrested in connection with his disappearance in the North Sea in 2002.
Mrs Darwin, who recently moved to the central American country, claimed she had not seen her husband since he vanished.
But last night, the manager of a holiday firm said the couple rented a room in Panama City in July 2006 and posed for the extraordinary picture on the company's website.
Former prison officer Darwin, 57, and Anne are both grinning as they audaciously pose for the photo beside Mario Vilar, boss of Move to Panama.
He said: "They said they were starting a new life in Panama and we helped them get their feet on the ground. Then they moved on. I thought nothing of it. The first I heard there was anything unusual about them was when your newspaper called.
Last night Darwin, from Seaton Carew, Cleveland, was in custody after police swooped on his son's home in Basingstoke, Hants.
Two police cars arrived at the house around midnight to make the arrest.
Neighbours told how detectives shouted through the door: "Mr Darwin, come out we need to speak to you." Then he emerged from the house and was led to a police car.
Move to Panama advertises itself as a specialist real estate firm for expats setting up home in central America. The firm was founded in 2002 and its website features dozens of photos of "satisfied customers", who have bought holiday homes or rented rooms.
Mr Vilar added: "I remember posing with them for that picture, they were quite happy to be pictured and knew it was going on the website.
"It's breathtaking to think they were happy to have their picture on the site when they knew they might get caught."
The picture was discovered by a friend who was surfing the internet after hearing Darwin's had reappeared.
A pal said: "She couldn't believe what she had seen and immediately called Cleveland Police." Earlier, it was reported that Darwin may have spent the past five years in America with an "internet" lover. He was in contact with "several women" in the US when he disappeared.
Darwin turned up at a London police station. A source told the Mirror: "He was able to give his name, date of birth and personal details, but claimed he did not know where he had been.
"Judging by his appearance, he has spent a fair bit of time abroad. He had a deep suntan and that would suggest he has not been living in this country. He certainly hasn't been in Seaton Carew."
